On Wednesday night, April 30 the MSC Incredibles V Team made the trip up to Oakland Chinatown to face the Lincoln Square TT Juniors in a match that would decide who would win the U3900 Division.
The Juniors were in first place with a 6-1 record and The Incredibles were in second place with a 5-2 record. The Incredibles played a line up consisting of Michael Wong, Claire Yeh and Ken Lin. The Juniors countered with Kevin Wong, David Zeng and Carey Lee.
The first match was Michael v Kevin. Michael was too steady at the beginning. Kevin rallied in the third game and caught up at deuce, but ended up losing 13-11 in the 3rd. 1-0 MSC.
Next up was Claire v David. Claire had not lost a single match yet in league play, and David had only lost once. David was too steady with his topspin play vs Claire's long pip variation and reverse backhand attack in the first 2 games. Claire was able to get some good attacks and weird blocks and took the third game 13-11. Inspired by the home crowd, David played patiently and was able
to win the match 11-6 in the 4th. The tie score is now 1-1.
Next up was the pivotal doubles. The Incredibles and the Juniors both had a 5-2 record in doubles during the season. Carey/Kevin played Claire/Ken in the doubles. There were not many long rallies as Kevin could not adjust to Claire's long pips variation. The Incredibles got out to a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, with Carey playing vs Claire's pips the Juniors played basically mistake free and won comfortably 11-5. In the fifth, the Incredibles were the ones playing mistake free and Ken landed many big balls. The Incredibles won the doubles 11-4 in the 5th, and lead in the tie 2-1.
The fourth match pitted Ken vs David. David came out on fire and played very well, running away 11-3 in the first. Ken steadied, and landed more of his huge loops, but still lost the 2nd at 11-9. In the third, Ken raced out to a 6-0 lead, only to watch David take the lead at 9-8. David finished with a tomahawk serve and won at 11-9 - an remarkable come back. The tie is now deadlocked at 2-2.
Michael and Carey played the 5th and deciding match. Both players were having trouble with spinny serves. With Carey up 2-0 Michael made a spirited rally at the end to deuce it. But Carey landed good forehands in some longer rallies, and won 12-10 in the 3rd. Congratulations to the U3900 Division winners - the Lincoln Square TT Juniors Team consisting of Carey Lee, David Zeng and the Wong Brothers Kenny and Kevin. It was a great season.
