U5700 2/23 Exige vs. Palo Alto Team 3

(Xiaohan Huang, Jerry Wang, George Zhao, Wim Coekaerts, Brian Chen, Ali Shafai)

Writeup by George Zhao

Cupertino might have a better chance if this game was not rescheduled. Both George and Xiaohan were suffered from flu and were not at peak of their physical level. Not an excuse for losing the game, but a warning for Cupertino to reconsider the way they select rosters, maybe they should choose players based on conditions rather than pre-fixed order.

First match, Ali's long servers to George's forehand scored directly a lot of times in the first two games, George's first step was slow causing his loop either out or weak. Ali got 2:0 ahead relatively easy. In the next two games, George 's forehand started to land, and Ali was relaxed a little, the game were tied at 2-2. In game five, George was able to land a few serve and attack to lead the game at 9-5. However, Ali scored the next five points to have 10-9 lead, and eventually won the fifth game at 13-11.

Second match, Brian was more aggressive than Jerry, winning the first game 11-8. Jerry's serve and attack in second game even the game at 1-1. In the third game, Brian's attack gave him a 6-2 lead, however, Jerry caught up to 6-6, from that point, it was all Brian's show, winning the critical third game 11-7. The forth game was close; Brian maintained the two points lead all the way and won again 11-7.

Cupertino has to win the double, however, Xiaohan was a little too aggressive and the unforced errors gave Palo Alto 2:0 lead, in the third game, Palo Alto lead 10-8, both team were playing ball placement, Cupertino tied the game at 10-10. With Xiaohan and Jerry's attack respectively, they won 12-10, however, the forth game was all Palo Alto, and they lead the game from the beginning and won 11-5.

The forth match was not as intensive as previous three, George simply cannot match the intensity and rushed his shots. Wim was able to counter attack after blocking 2-3 George's attacks, the match was over after game one.

The fifth match was a roller coaster, after winning 11-9, Ali suddenly missed all his attacks, losing the second game 11-3, then Ali was able to land all his forehand and backhand, winning game 3 11-6, the winning side story continued, Xiaohan won game 4 easily at 11-5. Game five was tied at 9:9 and Xiaohan's two good serves made him the winner of that game.
